Homicide victim Christine MacNeil, who was shot dead inside a Gatineau hotel room Monday night, had told Ottawa police she was a victim of human trafficking before she was killed, the Citizen has learned.

MacNeil was shot inside a guest room at The Four Points by Sheraton hotel on Laurier Street on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. Gatineau police responded to the downtown Gatineau hotel shortly after 8 p.m. when multiple guests reported hearing gunfire. Guests were told by police that a man had shot a woman.

As Ottawa police make efforts to protect human trafficking victims’ identities even in death, the force would only officially confirm that MacNeil was known to their force.

MacNeil was scheduled to appear in court next week on charges of assault, assault with a weapon and multiple breaches of conditions, from an event dating back to May 29 of this year.

It’s not yet known when MacNeil went to Ottawa police with her complaints of being exploited, but the Citizen has learned she stopped co-operating with the investigation against her suspected trafficker. Police believe she worked as an escort.

MacNeil was known to rent a hotel room for several days at a time and provide sexual services for money, according to sources. Her father, John MacNeil, told the Citizen that he couldn’t fathom why she would have been in a hotel room in Gatineau at the time she was killed. Christine MacNeil’s last known address is a condo on Fallowfield Road in Barrhaven.

The young woman, slain at just 25, also had ties to a noted Ottawa crime family. MacNeil was the former girlfriend of Emilio Spezzano, brother of Giovanni “Johnny” Spezzano, a member of the Hells Angels, who died by suicide earlier this year.

Johnny Spezzano was found dead at 1193 Maitland Ave. in January from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Photographs posted on MacNeil’s Facebook profile show her posing on a black 2008 rebuilt motorcycle registered to Emilio Spezzano.

Gatineau police spokeswoman Const. Andrée East said Friday that the police force has no update on the homicide investigation and won’t confirm whether they suspect the killing has links to the drug trade, biker gangs or the sex trade.

“We won’t release that information because it could compromise the investigation,” East said.

East confirmed that Gatineau police are working with Ottawa police, but would not comment on the nature of that collaboration.

MacNeil leaves behind her parents, sister, stepsister and stepbrother.
