A neighbour who said she was woken up by smoke coming from a home at 832 Albert St. Sunday morning said she tried kicking down the door to get in to rouse her neighbour before calling 911.

“I tried kicking (the door) in, I tried yelling his name,” said Melissa Roberts, adding that her dogs were going crazy. “I don’t know if the call was quick enough.”

Firefighters said a working fire was declared shortly after 10 a.m. after they received a 911 call. It was under control less than 20 minutes later. In a release, officials said firefighters performed CPR on a man, who was then handed over to paramedics.

Roberts said this is the second house fire this year — this one was on the second floor, the first one, she said, was on the ground floor and involved a coffee table. Roberts said her neighbour had had his struggles in life, but recently was “turning his life around.”

“He’d been doing quite well,” Roberts said, adding that she had recently given him a hug.

“He said, ‘Melissa, I’m doing OK.'”

One firefighter also suffered a minor injury.
