Howard Richmond’s account of what led him to stab his wife, Melissa, to death on July 25, 2013, has evolved since his arrest to include “complete and utter fabrication,” a prosecutor argued Tuesday.

In his cross-examination, assistant Crown attorney Peter Napier noted that the accused only now says that a flashback to the execution of a girl during Richmond’s peacekeeping tour in Croatia led him to kill Melissa. The former soldier testified this week that he sees the girl’s face when he hears loud noises.

Napier argued that Richmond failed to tell the doctor he was seeing for his post-traumatic stress disorder about the flashbacks to the girl in Croatia because they didn’t happen. When asked by one doctor and police, Richmond denied having flashbacks.

“I disagree, sir,” Richmond responded.

Napier argued that Richmond also failed to mention to one of the doctors who treated him that he may have thought Melissa was an enemy soldier when he was stabbing her to death.

“That’s a fabrication, too, Mr. Richmond,” Napier said.

Napier told court that Richmond also failed to tell the jury that he told a doctor he thought he was holding a bayonet instead of a screwdriver when he was stabbing his wife to death.

“You made that up,” Napier alleged, adding that Richmond said that to try to make it appear like he had a flashback to Croatia.

The trial continues Tuesday afternoon.
