Tiffany Moreau was asleep at 4 a.m. Saturday when she was shocked awake by a terrible, burning pain in her foot.

She had just been shot by a bullet that came through the ceiling of her apartment from a gun fired in the apartment above.

It was one of two unrelated east-end shootings early Saturday morning.

Her husband, Michael, called 911 and his mother.

“They’re a newlywed couple. They just got married in February,” said his mother, who asked not to be identified because she’s afraid.

“They’re only 25, just starting out. They’ve lost their bed. The police took their comforter, their pillows, their blankets (as evidence). Their mattress is full of blood. So they don’t even have a bed.

“That’s some Christmas gift.

“Thank God they’re alive. He could have shot her in the head.”

Police have arrested one man and said they are looking for two other suspects. The shooting happened in a low-rise apartment building at 1400 Appleton Drive, near Blair Road and the Pine View Golf Course.

“She was shot through the ceiling and the particles from the ceiling and blankets got into her foot, so they’re worried about it getting infected.

The information from the hospital is that Tiffany was hit by a .22-calibre bullet that stayed in the centre of the foot. It didn’t break any bones, but a doctor had to make an incision in the side of the foot to get it out, and Tiffany may have to have further cleaning of the wound later. She’s home on crutches for now, with no idea how long her recovery will take.

“She’s in terrible pain… She’s crying a lot because she’s in a lot of pain,” her mother-in-law said. “She said it felt like somebody electrocuted her: it was a shock, a burning to the foot, and no idea what was going on.”

The family were told the bullet didn’t go right through the foot because it slowed down as it passed through the ceiling and floor above.

She said there’s a second hole in the ceiling with plaster dust below it, suggesting there was a second shot.

The family has no idea who lives upstairs or why the shot was fired.

Tina and Michael were teenaged sweethearts. They had planned to invite her parents over for Christmas dinner, but those plans are now abandoned.

Three hours earlier, one man was shot in the back at about 1:20 a.m. in the 1400 block of Station Boulevard following an altercation involving several people.

Several shots were fired, police said, and the victim sustained “minor, non-life threatening injuries” and was taken to hospital.

Investigators interviewed several witnesses who indicated a number of people were seen fleeing in a beige vehicle.
