Environment Canada is recommending people use caution walking or driving in the capital region Saturday night and into Sunday.

In a special weather statement, the agency said the area centred in the capital, extending south to Cornwall and north to the Pembroke-Petawawa area can expect to see snow mixed with ice pellets through most of evening.

Accumulation is expected to range from five to 10 cm by Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the agency also advised that the area including Ottawa South, Richmond and Metcalfe can expect freezing rain Saturday night into Sunday.

“Furthermore, there is potential for ice amounts of 10 to 15 mm in a band from the higher ground south of Georgian Bay through Orillia to the northern Kawarthas, and eastward through Lanark County to the Kemptville area. This may cause some power outages,” the agency noted.

ALERTS IN EFFECT
Freezing Rain Warning
Issued at 18:17 Saturday 26 December 2015

Summary
Freezing rain developing tonight and continuing into Sunday morning. After a mild, benign weather pattern, a low pressure system originating from the American southwest is expected to propel a mixed bag of wintery weather into Southern Ontario tonight and into Sunday. Snow and ice pellets are forecast to develop this evening in most areas then change to freezing rain late this evening or overnight. The freezing rain will continue into Sunday morning before changing briefly to some snow or flurries before ending. There is potential for ice amounts of 5 to possibly 10 mm. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
