The national capital jobless rate dropped to 6.2 per cent in December, from 6.3 per cent in November, the lowest rate in 12 months, paced by a 1,300 drop in the region’s labour force, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

Ottawa’s jobless rate was steady at 6.3 per cent for the period, while the rate in Gatineau declined to 6.1 per cent from 6.4 per cent in November.

The report showed a slight improvement in high-tech employment in the capital region, with 41,000 jobs in December, versus 39,800 in November. That was still well below the 47,600 employed in the sector a year ago.

Federal government employment in the capital region was 131,400 in December, virtually unchanged from 131,500 in November and 130,200 last December.
