The jobless rate in the Capital region remained steady in November at 5.8 per cent for third straight month.

The number of jobs rose by 2,300, matched by a similar growth in the size of labour force.

The biggest gainer by job sector in November in the capital region was education, up 4,700 from October, while jobs in public administration (the vast majority of them federal) dropped 4,500 from October.

Federal government jobs dropped to 134,500 in the capital capital, from 138,300 in October. Jobs in that category were down 4,700 year over year.

Tech jobs in region slipped to 47,200 in November, compared with 47,800 in October, the third straight monthly decline. Jobs in the sector were down 1,700 year over year.

There was a sharp difference in the region’s two main cities.

Despite the loss of 800 jobs, Gatineau’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.4 per cent in November, from 5.8 per cent last month, because the labour force shrank even faster.

In Ottawa, it was the other way around: The number of jobs jumped 3,300, while the labour force grew by 4,000.

Nationally, Statistics Canada says the economy added 80,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate fell to 5.9 per cent, its lowest level since February, 2008.
