Snow and risk of freezing rain in forecast has city crews preparing to plow roads and sidewalks

Ottawa – Environment Canada is predicting a heavy snowfall followed by a risk of freezing rain and ice pellets starting Tuesday night and lasting into Wednesday morning that may result in reduced visibility, gusty winds, and potentially slippery roads and sidewalks. City road crews are preparing to plow and salt roads and sidewalks during this winter weather event.


The City of Ottawa is encouraging residents to visit the Winter Weather webpage on ottawa.ca for updates on City operations and tips on what residents can do in preparation for, and during, weather events.



Here is what you can expect, and what you can do, when there is:


Two to five centimetres of snow

• City crews will be deployed to salt Highway 174, the Transitway, arterial and major roads
• Sidewalks and cycle lanes in the downtown core will be plowed by City crews
• Residents are asked to exercise caution if driving, cycling or walking

Five to 15 centimetres of snow

• City crews will be deployed to salt Highway 174, the Transitway, arterial and major roads
• Sidewalks and cycle lanes in the downtown core will be plowed by City crews
• Once we receive more than seven centimetres, snow and ice will be plowed from secondary and residential roads

• Residents are asked to exercise caution if driving, cycling or walking
• The City will inform residents if a parking ban is placed into effect via ottawa.ca. Residents can also sign up for an e-alert

Here’s what to expect when there is freezing rain:

• City crews will be spreading salt and plowing roads and sidewalks
• Residents are asked to exercise caution if driving, cycling or walking due to the slippery conditions caused by slushy and icy roads
• The City has placed "do-it-yourself" grit boxes at various locations for residents to use. For grit box locations, visit ottawa.ca

Environment Canada is also predicting that the snow and freezing rain will transition to rain by mid-day Wednesday.


In the case of mild weather, here’s what to expect:

• City crews will be clearing catch basins to improve drainage during the expected melt, but with 56,000 catch basins across the city, residents can also help to improve the flow of stormwater and prevent localized flooding by clearing ones near their homes of snow and ice. The location of catch basins can be identified by the yellow “T” painted in the centre of the road.
