:zhichi:

Woman angered by treatment of elderly mother at Queensway Carleton Hospital

An Ottawa woman is accusing the Queensway Carleton Hospital of neglecting her aging mother’s care after she says she found her lying in soiled sheets with her call button disconnected.

Afshan Khan, an Ottawa paralegal, had been looking after her 80-year-old mother, Aziz Un Nisa, by herself in her Kanata home. Nisa injured her shoulder in a fall in early November and has been in the Queensway Carleton since while the family waits for a long-term care bed to open up. Khan says she’s been visiting her mother daily, bringing her food and helping her eat.

She says the hospital has been pressuring her to bring her mom home, but Khan says Nisa is too sick and Khan too tired and ill herself to care for her at home any longer.

The situation came to a head last Monday, when Khan said she went into her mother’s room and found her lying in soiled and urine-soaked sheets, sitting uncomfortably in a bed that was cranked to 90 degrees. The nurse call button had been disconnected, Khan said.

“The door was closed but I could hear my mother calling,” Khan said. “When I went in, my mom was crying. She said she’d been pressing the bell and nothing was happening.”

Khan confronted the nurses and the situation escalated. Hospital security was called and eventually Ottawa police showed up, too. Khan was ordered to leave and was told she was banned from the premises. Police told her she was lucky not to have been charged, Khan said.

She has complained to the Queensway Carleton ombudsman. She worries for her mom and for other patients who may not have family there to watch out for them.

“I don’t want other people to be treated like this,” Khan said. “I’ve seen people there who don’t have anyone to care for them. At least I’ve been there for my mother. What is happening shouldn’t be happening.”

In an email to the Citizen, Judy Brown, Director Communications & Cultural Competency for Queensway Carleton, said the hospital couldn’t talk about Khan’s complaint.

“Unfortunately Privacy Legislation does not allow us to comment on this case,” Brown wrote. “Ms. Khan’s concerns are being reviewed by our Patient Ombudsman as this is not the care QCH is known for. Ms. Khan is encouraged to contact our Ombudsman’s office for follow up on the investigation and any questions she has.”

Brown said call buttons sound an alarm if they are disconnected and would only be put out of reach if they weren’t working properly. In some cases, the button is put a little further away to encourage independence, but that’s only done after a clinical assessment and consulting with families, she said.

Nisa, who suffers from multiple health issues, including dementia, and has difficulty eating, illustrates the critical shortage of long-term care beds in Ottawa. The Queensway Carleton has an “alternative level of care” ward, where patients are placed when their acute illness is under control but their long-term destination is unknown. The ward, meant for 30, sometimes has 50 patients waiting for placement, said Leah Levesque, the hospital’s vice-president of patient care.

Some patients have been waiting on the ALC ward for more than 400 days, Levesque said. “If there were beds available, these patients would go there, but there is no capacity.”

"lying in soiled sheets with her call button disconnected."
