Ottawa firefighters used a construction crane and a “stokes” basket to rescue a worker after a large piece of ice reportedly fell on him at the bottom of a 31-metre pit at Preston Street and and Carling Avenue Wednesday morning.

The worker, in his 20s, is described as being in critical condition with head and other injuries.
