The Ottawa Police Service has confirmed that two people were taken into custody following a clash at a pro-life candlelight vigil Wednesday night at the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street.

The vigil had been organized by pro-life activists, but a counter-demonstration has staged by pro-choice supporters.

At some point, a fight broke out, forcing police to step in to break up the mêlée. No serious injuries were reported.

An investigation is ongoing.

The vigil was meant as a kickstart to Thursday’s annual March for Life rally. According to the advisory for this year’s event, the pre-march program on Parliament Hill will include speeches from unnamed “pro-life MPs,” as well as a “special keynote speaker,” Campaign Life Coalition national president Jim Hughes and “uplifting music by pro-life musicians” before the group embarks on a march through downtown streets.

Organizers have said they expect as many as 20,000 people to march.

Ottawa police have advised there will be rolling street blockades beginning at about 1 p.m. and lasting until about 4 p.m.
