A man from the Ottawa-area has been charged with impaired driving in Quebec after police found him asleep at the controls of a backhoe in a ditch.

The 41-year-old man, a resident of Sarsfield, about 30 kilometres east of Ottawa, had more than four times the legal amount of alcohol in his system — 349 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg.

Police from the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais found him around 2 a.m. Wednesday in a backhoe in L’Ange-Gardien, east of Gatineau.

He was asleep, and the backhoe was stuck in a roadside ditch.

The man has two recent convictions for impaired driving, police said. He has now been charged with impaired driving and driving while his licence was suspended.

The man was to make a court appearance later Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police are trying to find out who owns the backhoe, as the owner isn’t registered.
