Three weeks after a giant sinkhole opened up in downtown Ottawa, engineers have deemed Rideau Street safe for vehicular traffic.

In a memo to the Mayor and councillors, city manager Steve Kanellakos said the bustling street will reopen to OC Transpo, Gatineau’s STO and taxis on Saturday, July 2.

The street will remain closed to traffic on Canada Day.

Rideau Street remains closed to motorists and pedestrians between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street as originally scheduled, with construction continuing on the O-Train Confederation Line project, a closure which came into effect in June 2015 and will remain in place until 2018.

Kanellakos said the cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
