Police in the MRC des Collines saved an 84-year-old woman and a man from the water in the Chelsea Monday in separate rescues.

Around 10:30 a.m. they found a woman with Alzheimer’s disease who had wandered away from her home and fallen into the Gatineau River, where she was “almost completely submerged in the water” and holding on to a rock.

Police estimate she had been there for as much as two hours. She was taken to hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

About 1:30 p.m., a 45-year-old man from Ottawa phoned police and said he was going to commit suicide by drowning himself in Meech Lake.

When officers arrived at the lake they saw him out in the middle with his head in the water. They grabbed a canoe and hurried out to him. By the time the officers reached the man he was unconscious and appeared to be on the point of sinking.

It took the combined efforts of the MRC des Collines officers in the canoe, RCMP officers and paramedics to pull him onto dry land. He was taken to an intensive care unit in the Hull Hospital, but police say his life is not in danger.
