Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Saturday morning, forecasting thunderstorms and a lot of rain to ease the dryness of our lawns and gardens.
Rainfall between 20 to 40 millimetres was expected, with up to 75 millimetres falling in areas where thunderstorms are particularly persistent. The meteorological service did not say where across the city these storms might appear, but it is looking to be a very wet and humid day.
The rainfall is caused by a slow-moving low pressure system crossing the Great Lakes, meeting a humid and hot air mass caused by the unseasonably warm temperatures experienced in the region.
However, there will be some respite from the hot on Saturday: the high is expected to reach only 20 C, with a low of 19 C overnight and a continued chance of thunderstorms. The rain may continue into Sunday, potentially ruining the many outdoor events planned this weekend, with temperatures rising to about 25 C, but dropping to 15 C overnight.
Skies will remain cloudy at the start of the week, with no chance of rain, and temperatures rising to 28 C.
To report severe weather, send an email to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #ONStorm.
