Students at St. Paul public elementary school in Gatineau have been told to stay home until at least Monday after air quality tests confirmed the presence of asbestos in the school’s gymnasium Thursday.
Management and staff refused to let students into the school Thursday morning, sending them to the Eugène-Sauvageau community centre nearby, according to a news release posted on the Commission scolaire des Ports de l’Outaouais website.
Quebec’s health and occupational safety commission demanded that the asbestos be sealed off before further air quality tests are conducted in the days to come.
Parents and school staff will receive an update from the school board on Monday, the news release said.
