Monday morning’s crisp, cold and sunny weather was perfect for skating on the just-opened Rideau Canal, but don’t expect conditions to stay great for the rest of the week.

Ottawa will be hit with snow and ice pellets by Tuesday afternoon, and daytime temperatures will inch above freezing for the rest of the week, says Environment Canada.

Tuesday, Environment Canada warns that freezing rain will hit the area south of Ottawa, including Brockville, Gananoque, Merrickville, and Kemptville. Expect poor travel conditions.

In Ottawa, the forecast is for snow mixed with ice pellets beginning Tuesday afternoon, with an accumulation of about two centimetres and a high of -2 C. The snow should end by Wednesday morning.

And the forecast for the rest of the week, right through Sunday, Jan. 22, is for daytime temperatures hovering between one and three degrees above zero.

So skate while you can. Monday morning was -9 C, with a daytime high expected of 1 C, dipping to -11 C overnight.
