On school outing, Petawawa girl, 15, pulled from river, goes into convulsions

Students from a Pembroke high school watched helplessly yesterday afternoon as one of their friends died on the Ottawa River during a school trip.
The 15-year-old girl was one of 26 students from Bishop Smith Catholic High School on a whitewater rafting trip with a physical education class.
Michelle MacIsaac of Petawawa did not drown, but died after going into convulsions. She had fallen out of a raft and was pulled back, seemingly unharmed, into the raft.
The students were on the river adventure with the Esprit Rafting tour company from Calumet when Michelle fell overboard. She did not stay under water very long, police said, because she was wearing her life-jacket.
"It didn't take very long before she popped up," said Const. Jayson Gauthier.
Altogether, the Grade 11 student was in the water for between 15 and 30 seconds, according to school officials. It was the kind of plunge into the water that is routine on such whitewater trips, and is usually considered to be part of the fun -- for those who fall out and for those who haul them back onto the rafts.
Yet it was clear after Michelle emerged from the water that the spill was having an unexpected effect.
"She didn't seem very well," said Const. Gauthier.
Although Michelle was pulled conscious from the water by her fellow students, within minutes she began to experience convulsions.
She lost consciousness and her vital signs disappeared. Those around her tried to revive her as others paddled to shore. An ambulance was called and she was rushed to hospital in Shawville, where she was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m.
Police say they don't believe Michelle is likely to have hit her head on a rock. Const. Gauthier said the river didn't seem unusually rough. "There doesn't seem to be any criminal negligence by anybody there."
An autopsy will be conducted, he said. "We're certainly going to be looking at her medical past," Const. Gauthier said.
Bishop Smith principal Peter Adam said many of the students will only learn about Michelle's death today. Even the students who were on the trip didn't know how serious the situation was. "It would be a particularly traumatic event for them," Mr. Adam said. "Teenagers are very spiritual beings. And they want to have some meaning. In many ways, we are blessed because we are part of a Catholic school community that can pray together."
He described Michelle as "a healthy, happy, beautiful young girl who died tragically. She was full of life and participated in all student activities and was a great little girl."
Michelle's parents, Jacqueline and Don MacIsaac, work at the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa. Michelle's older sister, Melissa, graduated from the high school last year, and her brother, Michael, is in Grade 9.
Michelle's cousin, Corinna Young, 16, said Michelle was excited about this year, when she would finally be able to start driving.
"She was so nice, she wouldn't want any of her friends to be down about this," she said.
Mr. Adam said teachers at the school will hold a prayer session this morning and come up with a strategy to help students cope.
Capt. Jean-Marc Mercier, a public affairs officer for CFB Petawawa, said the death will be particularly hard on the close-knit military community because there are so many troops from Petawawa deployed overseas.
Last night, the base chaplain was at the MacIsaacs' home, consoling the family.
