In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

The Ottawa Citizen became the first North American paper of comparable size to switch from “hot metal” type and letterpress to computer-driven photocomposition and offset presses, in 1973. Despite early glitches, the new technology allowed crisp full-colour photo reproduction. Eminent Ottawa photographer Yousef Karsh was so impressed he offered the paper a portfolio of work to publish.
