Capital region's jobless rate climbs to 5.7 per cent in May

The capital region jobless rate jumped to 5.7 per cent in May from 5.3 per cent in April, reflecting a net loss of 800 jobs combined with 3,200 new entrants.

The biggest gainer by sector in the job market was wholesale and retail workers, with a net gain of 3,400 jobs over April.

The public administration sector shed 500 jobs.

The number of high-tech jobs edged up to 46,000 in capital region in May compared to 45,600 in April. It was the third straight monthly gain, up 4,700 over a year ago.


The Ottawa job market suffered net loss of 3,600 jobs in May vs April while Gatineau had net gain of 2,800 according to Statcan.

It was an odd switch in capital region conditions: Ottawa’s jobless rate jumped to 5.8 per cent in May vs 5.1 per cent in April, while Gatineau’s rate slipped to 5.6 per cent from 5.7 per cent.

The Ottawa market suffered net loss of 3,600 jobs in May over April, while Gatineau had net gain of 2,800, according to Statcan.

Nationally, Statistics Canada says the economy added 54,500 jobs in May, as full-time employment surged.

However, the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 6.6 per cent.
