The jobless rate in the national capital jumped for the fourth straight month and now sits at its highest level since September 2016, according to Statistics Canada.
The government department reported Friday that the unemployment rate in Ottawa-Gatineau in July jumped to 6.3 per cent, as the region lost a total of 3,600 jobs.
That’s a significant jump over the 5.9-per-cent unemployment rate reported by Statistics Canada in June.
There were a total of 724,700 people employed in Ottawa and Gatineau last month, as opposed to the 728,300 employed in June.
In Ottawa, the unemployment rate rose to 6.5 per cent, the highest its been since June 2016.
A total of 4,100 jobs were lost between June and July, and Statistics Canada reported there were 542,100 people working in Ottawa in July, as opposed to 546,200 in June.
In Gatineau, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.5 per cent. The city added 500 jobs to its economy last month, and Statistics Canada reported a total of 182,600 people were employed in Gatineau in July.
Nationally, the country added about 11,000 new jobs in July and Statistics Canada said the jobless rate dropped to 6.3 per cent.
