Panicked customers at Billings Bridge Mall fled or hid in stores after a shot was fired during a fight involving three men in the mall Monday afternoon.
A witness told the Citizen she was with her husband and sister in the Rogers store when they heard the fight break out at about 5:30 p.m.
“All of a sudden we hear a lot of shouting and hollering in the mall and we see two guys beating up another guy,” said the woman, who asked her name not be used. “Then we hear the gunshot. At that point, everyone started screaming and running.”
The woman said they took shelter inside the Rogers store with several others as staff rolled the partition closed. She said her sister and husband saw blood smeared on the wall and a single bullet casing on the floor.
They watched on a security monitor as other mall patrons scrambled for safety. The incident was unsettling so soon after the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, she said.
“We were terrified. To be in broad daylight in Billings Bridge Mall, right by a pet store with lots of families, and to see two guys come in and shoot somebody … I can’t even image what those poor people in Las Vegas went through.“
Two men were treated at hospital later Monday, though neither man’s injuries appeared to be from a gunshot, said Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Dave Spicer. Police said they had one person in custody.
