Ottawa police have charged a 21-year-old man after a shot was fired during a fight at the Billings Bridge Shopping Centre in October.
Houssine Ali, 21, has been charged with possession of an unauthorized firearm, careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Panicked customers at Billings Bridge fled or hid in stores after the shot was fired.
A witness told this newspaper she was with her husband and sister in the Rogers store when they heard the fight break out at about 5:30 p.m.
“All of a sudden we hear a lot of shouting and hollering in the mall and we see two guys beating up another guy,” said the woman, who asked her name not be used. “Then we hear the gunshot. At that point, everyone started screaming and running.”
At the time, police arrested and released two men involved with the altercation, who later went to hospital for minor injuries.
Ali was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
