Traffic slowdowns brought on by rain and a handful of fender benders caused havoc for morning commuters in Ottawa.

Ottawa police said that, while no major accidents were reported, the rain contributed to several minor collisions and saw traffic throughout the city increase to heavier than normal volumes.

Highway 416 northbound saw traffic backed up all the way from the Highway 417 exit through to Barrhaven. Traffic travelling eastbound along Highway 417 was also stopped into Kanata, as a stalled truck near the Pinecrest road exit and a collision near Maitland Road caused cars to slow and backed up traffic flow.

Police urged motorists to slow down and leave more space for stopping their vehicles in the wet weather.

They asked drivers to be particularly careful around cyclists and pedestrians.

Police were investigating reports claiming a pedestrian that had been struck on Albert Street between Metcalfe Road and Elgin Street downtown around 8:40 am. No further details about the collision were immediately available.
