Firefighters battle smoke, flames, extreme weather in Richmond Road blaze

Ottawa Fire Services continue tp to battle a dramatic blaze at 89 Richmond Rd. this afternoon.

Responders were called to the 89 Richmond Rd., near Island Park Drive, after receiving a number of calls for heavy smoke.

First arriving officers immediately declared a working fire in the three-storey building. A search of the building confirmed no one was inside.

Heavy fire conditions forced firefighters to adopt a defensive attack, protecting exposures as well as an adjacent high-rise conduominum building.

The extreme weather conditions prompted a call for additional crews to rotate with other firefighters out of the cold.

OC Transpo has provided a warming area for those on scene who need to shelter. Hydro Ottawa also cut power to the fire building and the adjacent high-rise.

The fire caused major traffic disruptions in the neighbourhood.
