Ottawa police say a handgun has been taken off the streets following a traffic stop in the south end early Sunday morning.

Around 2 a.m., a driver was arrested for drug offences during a stop at the corner of Spratt and Limebank roads. Police said investigators found a loaded handgun in the driver’s seat area of the vehicle. The driver did not have a certificate to possess or transport a handgun.

Ali Mohammed Hussein, 36, faces numerous weapons-related charges, including careless storage of a prohibited device, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle. He also faces an impaired operation of a motor vehicle charge and two counts of drug possession.

Mohammed Hussein appeared in court on Monday.
