A fire in the basement of a residential building at 241 Columbus Avenue in Overbrook was quickly put out by firefighters on Saturday morning, even though they had to dig out a snow-encrusted fire hydrant first.

There were no injuries in the fire, according to Ottawa Fire Services, although one person received help from victim services. Firefighters got a call at 8:16 a.m. about heavy smoke coming from the basement apartment in the building.

The firefighters had to dig out the fire hydrant, which was buried in snow and ice. That prompted a fire safety officer to remind Ottawa residents to help fire services by shovelling around fire hydrants in their neighbourhood.

Here’s the reason why we ask that you take a moment to shovel out a hydrant near you. Due to a fire, crews had to dig out this #hydrant on Columbus this morning that was buried in snow and ice. #EverySecondCounts #Ottnews pic.twitter.com/8Ztrx8CqwS

The fire was contained to one room in the basement, and was under control by 8:34 a.m.

The cause is unknown and no damage estimate was available.
