A student found critically injured after falling three storeys in a stairwell at Algonquin College has died, the college’s president has said in a message to staff and students.

The male student, who has not been named, was found Jan. 17 at about 4 p.m. at the bottom of a concrete stairwell in the college’s C building in an incident described as an accident. At the time, the college said the circumstances of the fall were not known, but college officials and police were gathering information.

In her statement to staff and students on Friday, Cheryl Jensen did not name the student or say anything more about the circumstances of his death.

“I first want to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of this student — I would ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts and prayers. I know our entire Algonquin community, especially this student’s friends, classmates, professors and mentors, will be grieving this terrible loss. I have reached out to the student’s family to offer any assistance our college can provide,” Jensen said in her statement.

“We wish to respect the privacy of this student’s loved ones and so will not be providing further details.”

At the time of the incident, paramedics said the student, who appeared to be in his early 20s, was found unconscious by campus security. Paramedics, who had to keep his airway open due to blood pooling in his mouth, said he sustained a head injury and an arm fracture. They weren’t aware of how long he had been in the stairwell.
