OC Transpo has figured out why its next-stop announcement system wasn’t working on some buses when federal inspectors went for rides around Ottawa last November.

Transportation general manager John Manconi provided the reasons in a memo to council on Tuesday. In one case, a bus left before its scheduled start time and threw off the automated system for the first few stops. In another case, the internal speakers on the bus weren’t working properly. The remaining case was a “technical issue,” the memo says.

The Canadian Transportation Agency fined the city $25,000 because of the wonky next-stop announcements on three buses last Nov. 14. The automated system wasn’t calling out the stops and the bus drivers didn’t call them out, either.

CTA regulations compel drivers to call out the stops if the automated announcement system is down.

In his memo, Manconi points out the inspectors took trips on 26 different buses and routes but only flagged four trips, registering an 85-per-cent success rate. The CTA expects total compliance.

Manconi says Transpo monitors the performance of the next-stop announcement system. Staff have increased maintenance inspections of all buses and on-street supervisors have started random spot-checks of system performance, he says.

Transpo encourages customers to let it know if the next-stop announcement system isn’t working.
