It’s the official start of summer and a glorious one at that.

Thursday’s forecast features nothing but sunshine and the longest day of the year to enjoy it ahead of what might be a wet weekend.

The day dawned at 5:14 a.m. and the sun won’t set until 8:54 p.m., Environment Canada reports.

The forecast is for the cool morning low of 12 C to rise to 22 C as northerly winds at 20 km/h become light Thursday morning under a UV index of 8 or very high. The overnight low is 8 C.

Friday starts out sunny but expect increasing cloudiness in the late afternoon, a high of 26 C and a low of 15 C.

Mixed skies and the risk of rain are forecast to arrive for the weekend.

Saturday’s high looks like 23 C with a 40 per cent chance of nighttime showers and a low of 15 C.

Sunday is forecast to be cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers both day and night, a high of 21 C and low of 12 C.

Monday’s forecast features a mix of sun and cloud, a high of 25 C and low of 12 C.

The winter and summer solstices are the two times of the year when the sun at noon is farthest from the equator, Environment Canada explains. The shortest day of the year in Canada is the winter solstice, which falls around December 21, when the sun is closer to the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. The longest day of the year is when the sun is closer to the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere.
