Mankind vs Peoplekind,

Election 2019: New poll puts Conservatives ahead
Rising support for the Bloc Québécois in Quebec could lead to the Conservatives forming a minority government, Forum Research poll says
Marian Scott, Montreal Gazette
Updated: October 8, 2019

A new poll taken after Monday’s federal leaders’ debate suggests that rising support for the Bloc Québécois in Quebec could put the Conservatives in power.

The telephone survey of 1,013 Canadians by Forum Research Inc. has the Tories leading with 35 per cent of voter intentions, while the Liberals are trailing with 28 per cent.

It puts the NDP in third place with 13 per cent, virtually tied with the Green Party at 12 per cent, while the Bloc Québécois has seven per cent and the People’s Party has three per cent.

The poll was conducted on Monday night and Tuesday.

The pollster said that could translate into a Conservative minority government, with 152 seats for the Tories, 117 for the Liberals, 36 for the Bloc Québécois, 29 for the NDP and four for the Greens.

While previous Forum polls since January had showed the Bloc winning between zero and 27 seats, this one suggests the Quebec sovereignist party could win 36 seats — almost half of Quebec’s total of 78.

“In the immediate aftermath of the debate, support seems to be shifting away from the Liberals,” said Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research.

“Rising intention for the Bloc is hurting their seat prospects in Quebec, while the Conservatives are slightly above where we saw them a few weeks ago,” he added.

Quebec Premier François Legault lashed out at Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau Tuesday for boasting in the debate that he was the only federal leader ready to say he might make use of the courts to fight Quebec’s secularism law.

Legault slammed Trudeau for saying he might contest Bill 21 despite popular support for it in Quebec, calling Trudeau’s comments “very regrettable.”

Asked which leader won the debate, 23 per cent of respondents said it was Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, 21 per cent said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, 15 per cent said Trudeau, seven per cent said Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet and five per cent said Green Leader Elizabeth May.

Twenty-nine per cent said Trudeau lost the debate, while 21 per cent said Scheer lost it.

Another 15 per cent said People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier lost the debate, while six per cent said Blanchet did, four per cent said Singh did, and three per cent said May did.

Twenty-nine per cent said Scheer would make the best prime minister, beating Trudeau at 25 per cent, followed by Singh at 19 per cent and May at eight per cent.

A previous poll by Forum conducted one week ago showed the Liberals ahead in popular support with 34 per cent of voter intentions, just ahead of the Conservatives at 31 per cent. That poll showed the NDP and Greens far behind with 12 per cent each, and the Bloc with six per cent. Under that scenario, it said, the Liberals could win 168 seats, the Tories 130, the NDP 21, the Bloc 15 and the Greens four.

Results of the poll are considered to be accurate within three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
