Italy's Lombardy region press office has issued a list of towns and villages that are in complete lockdown, inside the so-called "red zones" created to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
They are:
  1. Codogno
  2. Castiglione D'Adda
  3. Casalpusterlengo
  4. Fombio
  5. Maleo
  6. Somaglia
  7. Bertonico
  8. Terranova dei Passerini
  9. Castelgerundo
  10. San Fioran
What "red zones" mean: Measures in "red zones" include a ban on the public from entering or leaving the zone, closure of train stations and suspension of public transportation, such as buses.

Italy now has the highest number of coronavirus infections outside Asia, as 54 new cases were detected in the country's north overnight, bringing the total to 283, the Italian civil protection agency said today. The cases are heavily concentrated in the region of Lombardy, where 212 infections have been confirmed.

Seven people have so far died from the virus in the country.

Here's a look at the 10 towns:

South Korean outbreak spreads to the military

Last week, there were 51 people infected in South Korea. Today, there are 1,146.

The outbreak began in the southern city of Daegu and was centered around the Shincheonji religious group, but the virus appears to have spread now beyond practitioners.
Military cases: 18 South Korean soldiers have been infected, and the country's defense ministry has placed significant restrictions on soldiers leaving their bases.

US soldier: A US service member stationed in South Korea tested positive for the virus, according to a US Forces Korea statement today.
The soldier is the first US service member to test positive for the novel coronavirus. He is stationed at Camp Carroll, about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Daegu, and is currently in self-quarantine as officials track down the people he had been in contact with.

US-Korea military drills: The virus' spread also prompted South Korea and the United States to scale back joint military drills, according to three US officials.

The three officials said this would be the first major impact of coronavirus on US military readiness, according to the officials. Without the full exercise, the US could lose ground in being able to quickly conduct future operations in a coordinated and highly synchronized manner with South Korea against North Korea in the event of a crisis, one of the officials said.

US could see a similar death rate to China if the virus spreads, says top infectious diseases doctor

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN the US needed more resources to fight the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected 53 people in the US.

“We’ve had a pandemic preparedness plan that we really developed in preparation for pandemic influenza, that we can extrapolate to this. We certainly need more resources, and that’s what you heard today with the supplemental request. Because we can only go a certain way with the resources we have,” Fauci said.

Death rate: Fauci added that the fatality rate of the outbreak could reach the same levels in the US as in China because there is no vaccine or cure available.

"I mean, the people who are dying who require intensive care, for example in an intensive care unit -- maybe even intubation for respiratory assistance in breathing -- the Chinese have that. They have a pretty good system, and yet you’re still seeing the 2% mortality. So it isn’t a question of, ‘they don’t have as good care as we have.’ So if, in fact, we do get a pandemic that does impact us in this country, I think you’re going to see comparable types of morbidity and mortality," he said.

For the first time, more new coronavirus cases were reported outside of China than inside today
From CNN's Michael Nedelman

For the first time in the novel coronavirus outbreak, the number of new cases reported outside of China in a single day was larger than those reported inside China, the World Health Organization reported today.

China reported 412 newly confirmed cases today, while 459 additional cases were reported outside of China, according to WHO’s daily report.

Most of China’s cases came from Hubei province, which reported 401 new cases. Six came from outside mainland China, including four from Hong Kong, which WHO includes in China’s count.

More than half of new cases outside of China came from South Korea, which reported 284 cases.

South Korea has recorded five more cases of novel coronavirus, the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Wednesday, after confirming 15 cases earlier in the day.

That makes a total of 20 cases confirmed on Wednesday -- the biggest jump for South Korea in a single day.

According to a government news release, 13 of the initial 15 are from the Daegu area in the country's southeast.

One of the infections is an 11-year-old girl who is the daughter of a previously-confirmed patient.

The total number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in South Korea is now 51.

Japanese woman reinfected with coronavirus weeks after initial recovery
From CNN's Junko Ogura in Tokyo

A woman working as a tour bus guide in Japan has tested positive for the coronavirus for a second time, Osaka's prefecture government said on Wednesday.
The first case of reinfection to be reported in the country comes amid mounting fears over the spread of coronavirus there. The number of confirmed cases in Japan has risen to more than 800 -- nearly 700 of which were reported on a cruise liner quarantined off Tokyo earlier this month -- and seven people have died.

The 40-year-old woman, an Osaka resident, tested positive on Wednesday after developing chest pains and a sore throat, the prefectural government said in a statement. She first tested positive in late January and was discharged from hospital on February 1, after being treated for symptoms at a hospital in Osaka.

The Japanese Ministry of Health guidelines state that coronavirus patients must get tested twice before their release.

The woman had contact with tourists from Wuhan while working as a tour guide in mid-January. An Osaka prefectural official told CNN that she did not attend work, wore a mask at all times and did not have close contact with anyone while she was not in a medical facility.
