Ontario may get worst START to winter in 25 years

Fear not Ontarians.

Despite recent headlines to the contrary, the province isn’t going to have some of its worst winter weather in 25 years.

Instead, The Weather Network’s meteorologist Doug Gillham says early December is going to be more wintry than we’ve become used to.

“We kind of do tease to December (in the late fall forecast) and (other media) took that and presented it as the entire winter,” said Gillham. “That’s problematic because how winter starts doesn’t necessarily mean how it’s going to be for January and February. We haven’t publicly posted anything about the heart of winter. We’re calling for the worst START to winter in 25 years.”

Gillham said Ontario has mostly enjoyed milder Decembers over the last quarter century, but he doesn’t think that will be the case this year.

“This December looks different than what we’ve become accustomed to,” he said.

“It doesn’t mean it’ll be historic. Decembers have just not been winter most years. We think this year will be more like just a handful of years where we have had winter weather (in December). And the pattern will probably change in mid-December.”

Gillham pointed out out that TWN only released its late fall forecast and hasn’t even released its winter preview, which won’t happen for at least a few more weeks, and the final winter forecast comes around Nov. 30.

For Toronto, meanwhile, Gillham said the city could see plenty of the white stuff in December.

“So the snowbelts should do really well because the lakes will be warm and when you bring arctic air in after a warm fall, lake effect snow should be abundant,” he said.
“For Toronto, it comes down to the exact storm track. Sometimes you get cold patterns and the storms miss us to the south. I do expect to see at least normal snowfall. It’s too soon to say it’s going to be epic or extraordinary. That comes down to the exact track of probably one or two storms and we’ll be working to pin that down five days in advance — not two months.”
