Latest COVID-19 news in Ottawa
Daily COVID-19 case counts in Ottawa are likely to more than double by mid-December, and could reach record highs, depending on the impact of the Omicron variant and other factors, according to a new forecast.
Scientists and public health experts on the website
613covid.ca say cases in the city are expected to double every 12 days. By Dec. 18, daily COVID-19 case counts in Ottawa are likely to be around 135, but they could go much higher.
Depending on a number of factors, including the impact of variants, daily cases could spike to more than 720 a day in the city, according to the projections — a number not seen since the pandemic began. The projections contain a wide range of probabilities, in part because of uncertainty about the impact of the new, more transmissible Omicron variant during a period of high socialization leading up to the holidays..
Forecasters do not expect hospitalizations to reach record high levels in Ottawa, however. Hospitalizations could remain fairly stable in Ottawa or could rise from the current seven patients in hospital to as high as 23 patients. That is lower than hospitalizations earlier this fall.
The introduction of Omicron to Ontario has changed the possible rate of COVID-19 growth and transmission. Ottawa has confirmed four cases of the highly transmissible variant, including the two first cases in the country, among recent travellers to Nigeria.
The latest projections were updated earlier this week.
