Cancer treatment and survical rate is my favorite topic, and I agree in general early detection is important (there is dispute about is, I will write another post if there is some not-too-stupid responds to the following).

American researchers has been puzzled by the Canadian experience with colon-rectal cancer:

*. We all know it takes a long waiting time to see a colon specialist in Canada (say 6 weeks, I don't know the exact number).
*. Yet, the medium survival time of colon cancer patients, is higher in Canada than US !

Why is that ? Why late detection results in better survival ?

Some researchers give the following explainition (I am not necessarly agree): See there is 2 patients, one Canadian and one American. All the numbers are just for illustration.

The Canadian: wait for 6 weeks, then get treatment.
The American: wait is only 3 weeks (yes there are also serious waiting problem in US), but with a charge of $20 for the patient. And just for $20, many patients will delay 5 weeks voluntarily to see a doctor, until they are really uncomfortable ! Result: 8 weeks before the treatment !

Don't think the Canadian system is that crappy because you heard lots of complaints and yourself are not used to the way it works. The US system, in average, is not better than Canadian. As to the Chinese medical system, I have nothing to say, because it's so corrupt and unfair. I am not saying the Canadian system is the best, but don't judge by the number of complaints.

In democratic countries, whatever the government does, there will be loud complaints, for sure. That's how democray works.

After all, with fixed amount of money and fairness in mind, what can you do?

When you have fever, the first thing is to reduce your body temperature, take stuff like Advil if it's a cold or flu. I have never seen a case when you have to wait 1-2 hours in a walk-in clinic. If that clinic is packed, go and find another.

Well, go ahead (if you can come to US as I do), yet another prove you are stupid.

老二, he's not talking about where we should go. His point is that Canadian medical system is not so bad as a lot of people think.
Even if you want to go to west Africa, it does not mean overall it's also a better place for a lot others. It just means you think you may find better oppurtunities over there.
