<HTML>妮妮, I hear you, that's tough. I once sold a $100 psychology book for $6 to the university bookstore. Being a student is difficult, but I think 过客 meant well. Once again, I stress that fact that photocopying books is NOT a Chinese issue, it's a STUDENT issue.</HTML>

妮妮, be smart bah....

<HTML>If it was Fall, try to buy a used book.

Anyways, it is no big deal to copy as long as you are not caught. But it makes others look down upon you because this society pays respect to Intellectural Property, such as copyright, which is other's asset.</HTML>

as a student, i don't think it's wrong using photocopied books. As a administration student, all our books are expensive and they change edition pretty much every year, so it's really hard for us to buy scond-hand books. If we buy them all as new, they would have cost us around400-500 each semseter and that's means 1000 dollars each years just books!!! And we couldn't sell them afterward becasue of the new edition coming out.Do you guys think they worth that much?? In my opinion, NO!! That's like robbery!! Some books we need only use once, adn never need to touch it again. So that's we don't wanna buy all book in new adn that's why we use photocopied books in order to save some money for our parents or ourselves. Also, as a person said above, photo copying is not a Chinese issue, it's a student issue, many Canadian student also photocopied their books.

As I remember, when I was a student I need spent about 100RMB-200RMB for teaching material books each semseter. At that time, the regular expense is from 300RMB to 500RMB per month (not include residence). Compare to the student life now, I don't know how much you need per month. As my experience, 400-500 per semseter is reasonable for most guys spend around 1000CAD per month. If you do not have money, just get second hand when possible. There are lots of Chinese guys study here, you guys can set up some exchange collection. If you do not have any choice, do what something underground, don't say "造反有理,复印无罪" like those young guys in 60's in China. Becuase you are in Canada now, if you are permanent resident, go to get some government support if you do not have money. If you are international student, you should think about why Canada issue you the student visa. If your family can support you easily, why you save money in this illegal way? If your family can't support you easily, it is your time to support yourself. If you are the one like what I heard from this forum, you can spend 1000CAD for cloth, you should be self-condemned for what you did this illegal way.

the thing is i am not one of the guys who spend 1000 dollars per month for living or for clothing. For us poor student, that's a lot money!! we won't spend 1000 dollars for living or clothing. I am self supported person, and many of my friends are the same. we are just trying to save some money becasue we know how hard to earn every single dollar here in Canada. We don't mean to be as u said "造反有理,复印无罪" we just wanna have people understand our situation, being a student is not easy here in university, especially when there is only limited financial support, we need to budget and planning evrything that related to money.

What are you here for? Study, right? So buying the books for study is supposed to be part of your responsibility. It doesn't matter at all if you will need to use the books after graduation or not. The cost of the books is part of your cost of tuition. If you cannot afford it, that is your problem. Can you go to a restaurant and say, hey, I am hungry, but i don't have money, give me 80% off! That's crazy, right? So why can the same behaviour be tolerated in educational circumstance?

Let me ask you one more question. Suppose you find a job after graduation, can the employer pay you the same salary as that of the same position in China? I bet you will say, NOO! This is in Canada, I deserve more!

That's right, you deserve more. What I want you to know is, in north America, books deserve more too! They are much more expensive than in China partially because the copyright is way well protected here than in China. You cannot compare the book price in Canada with that in China at all. You should know it before you came to Canada.

I am studying in OU too. I know many students are copying books and at the same time they use high speed internet, they buy $100 skating blade, somebody have a car, somebody even buy parking permit on the campus for more than $100 per month. Are they poor? Are they really not be able to afford books?! I DO NOT THINK SO!

The only reason why you guys copy is TO SAVE MONEY IN AN ILLEGAL WAY! Don't make excuses of poverty, difficulties in resale. You are a MBA student, right? How can you not understand the concept of "Legal Environment"? How can you not understand the concept of "copyright"?
How can you not understand the concept of "cost behaviour"?

It is you guys that is doing robbery, stealing, not the university!

first of all, i am not a MBA student, just a regular undergraduate student.
Secondly, don't be so agressive ok? Calm down, we all here just express our opinions. Different people have different opinions, if that's yours above, that's fine, i respect that, but please also respect mine as well. my opinion is not refering to specific individual, just trying to express a situation.Everyone has different situation or reasons to their behaviours, we can't judge people by just one fact or appearance, right?

actually I think university should include the text in tuition...china is better on that...even the textbook they distributed were not as good as text in canada. but I don't think I learn less from it. we are all willing to spend money on books we like. but textbooks....like 梅子 said, it's expansive and useless after 4 months...frankly, no people with a brain would enjoy it. Even all 过客 said is technically right....the way we think is unchanged, maybe poverty brain washed us...but I'll save every cent I can, do my best not buying new text...and I'm getting used to it.
