Why do health care costs so much, it’s the drugs, and it’s the rent, equipment, doctors, and nurses we have to pay. The facts are, Drugs costs in Canada is much lower than that of the US, why because of our universal health care, we can negotiate with the major drug companies to get a huge discount. That’s why you see Americans come across the boarder to buy our cheap drugs. The hospitals in Canada don’t pay rent, because they own all their buildings. Canadian doctors are paid a fraction of what doctors gets paid in the US. (My sister who’s going to be a orthopedic surgeon who will make $200,000 CAN, would be able to make up to 1 Million US if she’s going to move to the US) that’s why we are having a shortage of doctors, because the doctors in the US are making much more money, and some of our Canadian Doctors are moving to the US.

Why that doctor in the US is can make more money than doctors in Canada? It’s simply; they charge more to the patients. Do you know that in US if you go for a check up its $400 us per visit? Do you know that 50% of the Americans #1 concern with the health care is it’s too expensive?

Taxes are not all bad; there are times it’s a good deal to pay more tax. I have a personal story to tell. I have a business in Ottawa, and Ottawa just passed the bylaw in May to no longer to pick up garbage for business. That will save the city $450,000 per year. The city is doing that because the pressure from the public to cut budget and keep the tax low. But for the city to save $ 450,000 it will cost business in Ottawa $3.5 millions to get their garbage picked up by private company. Consider Businesses are already paying 3-4 times more tax than regular residential unites. Is this a good deal for me? No. do businesses rather pay the $450,000 tax increase or pay $3.5 million out of their own pocket. Of course rather get a small tax increase, but that’s too late now. So there are times that paying tax can save you money. In a way I think that’s our health care, it would cost you more if you privatize health care.

When you think about universal health care, don’t just think about how many times YOU went to the doctor last year. Think about how many times your parents visited doctors, how many times your kids went to the doctors and how many times you will be visit the doctors when you get older.

Let me restate the facts.

Doctors in Canada are paid much less than the doctors in US. That Drugs costs in Canada are much less that Drugs in US. You are paying for you and your whole family and your futures health care.

The problem is not lying in the costs; the problem is some people are abusing the system. A small amount like $10 of user fee will stop most of the abusing.

Right now Ontario is pouring 47% of its budget into healthcare, how much more is enough?

The problem is not about money, but the system.

For instance in Britain, "The National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 to provide free healthcare for all the residents of the UK.

For its founders, the most important feature was that it was free at the point of need. This means that every time you go to the doctor or receive treatment at hospital, it is provided free of charge. The NHS is funded through general taxation and is run by the Department of Health.

There is also a private healthcare sector in the UK. People pay for private healthcare either through insurance or when they use its services."

The NHS and the private sector work together to provide better services to the residents of UK through means such as outsourcing treatments or private finance initiatives (PFI).

To find out more about how the parallel healthcare system works in UK, read here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/ican/A2454978

In practice, most private sectors focused on specialized treatments. If this parallel healthcare system is implemented in Canada, it will drastically reduce the waiting time for those seeking specialized medical treatment, such as organ transplants or cancer treatments.

I think it's a good idea, do you?

The drug is not covered by the health plan except for the seniors.

We Canadians are getting a good deal with the universal health care.

CBC showed a comparison last night about the US and Canada health system. One canadian has to wait for 2.5 year for his knee operation but he doesn't have to pay a penny, while an american waited for only 2 weeks for the operation , for sure he has to pay around thousand dollar for it. Which system do you want? Do you want to suffer pain for 2.5 year or you want to get it fixed ASAP? Wake up, folks, Canada health system is just for poor people, you have to wait for the same time as anyone else. You don't have a choice even you have money. The long waiting list will kill you. Even if I am poor, but if I have to pay for fixing my health porblem ASAP, I would like to borrow money to do it.

I agreed with Low Green from CFRA this morning, he said that we already can pay for 200 bucks to upgrade from normal ward in hospital to a private room, why we cann't allow to have two-tier system. Why do we have to always compare with US system, there are other systems like some in Europe, which we can learn from. They are two tier systems.

Why Paul Martin promise to inject 5 billions into health system now, but not 2 years ago when that report came out. Who cut the health trasfer to province and cause this long waiting list, it's liberal and it's Paul Martin who was the financial minister.

This health system needs reform and it will benefit both the poor and rich. Monopoly on health care in Canada only allows the government to tax heavily on you and you have no control on where they waste your money. Why cann't we use the tax money to buy private health insurnace t pay for the health expense by ourselves.

I remember in one debate, a guy said why cann't I have the freedom to choose how to spend my money on health care. That's a good point.

So wake up, guys, let's elect the conservative which is the first step to start the health reform. Otherwise, there is no hope for this system and no hope for the sick people.

no if you're the healthiest person on Earth. yea the system favours the elderly and the sickly. not that its a bad thing. i personally don't want it privatized

Re: Re: Are Canadians getting a good deal with universal health care?

Talk about Low Green, this morning he's talking about how Canada is invaded by immigrates just like a war. I was so mad. How can you believe Conservative if your savior. Also I don’t think health care need major fix, just a little user fee will do just fine.

I'm curious to know: if you are faced with a life-threatening illness (God forbid!), and you have the choice to:

1. Spend all your money on a cure, whether it is an operation or an organ or medication; or
2. Wait to die

What would you choose? And would you rather have that choice?

Come on, if you really have money, you can always comes to US for treatment.

It only takes you less than 1 hour to drive to USA from Ottawa. My record is 39 minutes from Barrheaven to Odensburg, New York.

So next time, spend your money in US, and leave the precious medical resource to other less wealthy Canadians.

Unlike you, I CARE about the health system in Canada, and NO, US (or money for that matter) isn't the answer for everything. :o

You want a two-tiers system, is that correct ? In a two-tier system, 10% of those wealthy people like you may get a faster service, but rest 90% will face an even longer wait.

Did you care about the Canadian health system ? No, you want to be a queue-jumper. You want your money to buy you a better chance of survival than others around you. You want your money to make you "different", which most Canadian considered morally criminal and rightly rejected.
