Canada is a Christian country. In the 2001 Census, over 77% of Canadians are of Christian faith, so that makes Canada a Christian country. That's why so many Canadians are offended by the idea of changing the traditional definition of marriage. In their mind, this is a step forward to push the country to be completely secular.

I think Canadian Charter instead of Christian Faith rules Canada. It is quite different from USA. Although Christian population takes up most of Canadians, they should still obey Charter of Freedom, Equality and Human Rights. Anyway, not all Christian people think so, especially in young generations.

Watch your mouth! Your words already are discrimination and hatred which are prohibited and can be prosecuted by Canadian laws.

You raised an interesting point!

Although religion has been separated from state for quite some time, when it comes to what's called "foundational values", the religion still dictates quite a large percentage of the Canadian population.

The Canadian Charter of Human Rights is imposed by the state, but it has no jurisdiction on religious belief. However what is the issue at hand, really? Gay marriage? No, I think that the issue at hand is actually: "Should the consititution supercede religion?" At least, that's many Canadians are afraid of: traditional, religious values are disappearing, instead, the country is more and more secular. Is this what the country wants? The country that is founded on Christian values?

By the same token, can I ask "Should the religion supercede constitution?" When in conflict, I prefer constitution over religion everyday.

The opposite of Christian is not secular, it could be other religion. Afterall, it is a country of multi-culture. Personally I don't feel Christian is that much superior over others. In this case it seems to go secular as most of religion are against it I guess.

A country founded based on Christian does not have to be Christian forever, doesn't it? Many Christian countries around the world are transformed from non-Christian to Christian, who to say they will not transform to something else?

In my opinion, the constitution must supercede religion, which can guarantee real individual freedom of religion selection, and guarantee real individual equity and human rights. Otherwise, you could trace back to long history and find tons of negative examples, many of which are from Christrian History.

As for the "more secular issue", I don't think so high divorce date is good for family and society. Keeping a family secular is nothing to do with the family structure, however, mutual true love is the key no matter what kind of family structure is.

Are you a hat seller? Keep the hat for yourself, ok?

Do you understand Chinese? Where is "discrimination " or "hatred" in my words?

I know Human Rights is your big selling point. Just keep selling. I am not against it either. By the way, do you know what the free speech is?

It's easier said than done. What would you feel if China overturns the entire Confucius value system?

I take that you are not Christian, neither am I, so this is not really a big issue for me. However you have to understand how Christians feel, and recognize that this whole country is founded on Christian values. Understand and respect that.

You think that the constitution should be the ultimate deciding factor, OK, then let me take this discussion a little further: what if the constitution is in direct conflict with what you believe? In other words, what if the constitution touches on issues that you consider your core moral values? Issues like abortion or organ/human cloning? It's not as easy to decide as this one, is it?

Personally I think these "foundational issues" are best left to the Supreme Court to decide, otherwise we'll never hear the end of it. As of now, I still have faith in the constitution, but I'm less certain as where it is going to take us.
