You can use some soap water with a bruch to test leak around all the joints.
If you see bubbles, that means leak.

There should be a control to turn the gas off near fireplace and another one in the basement.

If there is leak, you turn the control off and call Direct Energy ask them for advice.

I should call Enbridge or some gas protection service companies in phone book?

thank you guys and/or girls!

Yes, you should call enbridge or direct energy first. They kept on changing the names.. They are quite helpful. My gas line outside the house was leaking (smell), they came right away (free). For your fireplace, as it is your appliance, you may need to pay.

Yes, the pilot is also important. If it is off and you did not turn off the controls, it could be the problem. Before you relight it, you should turn the control off for a few hours to make there is no gas in the fireplace. Read the lighting instruction carefully. Or wait until the fall to re-light the pilot.

I saw the gas repairman using soap water to test the joints, which makes sense to me. Definitely, do not try to re-light the pilot, if you smell gas.

No really. Close to the pilot there is a valve (or switch) which controlled by temperature: it is on only when the pilot is on and off when the pilot is off. That is why, when you light your pilot, you need to hold a button for about a minute to bypass that valve since the valve is off at that time.
