Macro Lens

what's 500D?

500D is a close up lens. much like a big filter. It converts your normal lens into a macro lens.....well....sort of.

买个CANON 500D, 便宜又好用. 接在我的XZP上非常不错.

what is XZP? sorry for my limited knowledge.... Would you mind to post a sample shot you have done with it? Thanks!

XZP 就是"小竹炮": Nikon 70-200mm2.8VR.
500D就是一放大镜. ;)

Xterra: just want to remind you that 100/2.8 is slow in terms of focus. It should be good for portrait on still subjects but propably not so good for moving stuff and sports.

You might also look into 85/1.8 + extension tubes.

Thanks fad for your kind advice!

I knew macros are slow in general. It is not good for candid/street shots, because one can not predict the movement of people on the street. However, indoor sports, I always preset the focal length at a point I think the player will must go through, as he/she is approaching, I fire multiple shots, there is a good chance to get a razor sharp image out of them. I found it was difficult to chase players with AF. the images are ok type, not very sharp when looked closely, especially indoor with my 70-200 F/4. Obviously, I lose many excellent moments by preset focal length, but I could at least get some good ones back home. or I need to get a 400L prime. until then, I will leave those moments to photojounalists. :D

I thought about extension tubes before I decided to go with a real deal. My xxb is an excellent lens. I have no doubt if I have a extension tube attached to it, I will have wonderful images. The problem is, an extension tube decreases the focusing distance. I will have to get really close the object. now, with flowers, it would not be a big problem. but with animals/insects, I would have either scared them away or been eaten with the extension tube. :D so did I decide to get a real deal....

I attached an award winning photo taken with sigma 105mm Macro. This photo shows there are things, extension tubes do not fit in.

and here is another sample from Sigma 105

So XZP is an equivalent of DB (Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 IS)?

DB是100-400,70-200是小白呵呵

xterra: pre-focus works well in some sport, e.g., volleyball, I use it too. However, it is not so useful for things like soccer or basketball, etc., where the players are moving all over the place.

I'm confused by your statement of working distance and the sample you gave. When you are shooting macro type of stuff, you have to get close to the objects, whether you use macro lens or closeup filter. The sample you gave is not a macro photo, rather a portrait done with macro lens. To get such sharp photos, it does not have to be a macro, it can be any decent prime lens and some quality zoom lens.

To be honest, I find the eagle shot a bit oversharpened to my taste, almost unreal.

Check this out.

That is a great configuration for poor men, like me. In Canon world, we had the same thing. But 2.0x brings down too much in terms of light and contrast. it is hardly usable. Also it is designed to work with fast primes. Sigh, if the 2.0 was as good as 1.4x, I think most people would buy them for sure.

Thanks for your reply, fad! I agree with you on the limitation of pre-focusing in sports. But those sports are meant to be outdoors right? in that case, my xxb would be able to handle. I will not need my new macro in this case. besides the reach of my new macro will not be long enough.

Those are macros IMO. I don't know what is the defination of Macro. Does it have to be life size or beyond? If that is so, most of our "macro" works posted here were not macro. After some macro shootings, I often found myself blocking the lights or scare the insect away when I get too close to it. I think that is why Canon and others makes 180mm Macro lens. one'd think they must be insane. :) I don't know about primes, I personally never owned a prime. I can not tell if they are sharp enough to take a shot as macro lenses do. What I am getting at from the research I have done so far from the internet is for a great sharp photo that reveals every details of an object normally done by a macro lens. If you or anyone here has a prime, and would like to experiment, I would love to have a comparison going. I will use either 105 or 100 macro for comparison (depends what I will get). the result would be really interesting and helpful to others, when they come across the same situation.

For the sharpness of the eagle. It is really a personal taste. I really liked the clear/sharp feathers of the eagle. :)
