History of the NDP and its Leadership
Two Beginnings, One Political Movement
Canadian socialist politics originated during in two periods:
The 1930s
In the 1930s the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), based primarily in western Canada, fought to end workers' poverty while promoting the rights of women and immigrant minorities.
The 1960s
In the 1960s, following a loss in popularity, the CCF joined the Canadian Labour Congress to become the NDP. While the newly formed NDP continued to attract labour and equal rights activists, the party platform diversified to involve youth activists in the environmental movement.
Fighting Anti-Socialism
During these formative periods, the socialist movement faced great political opposition because it opposed the interests of business while supporting labour unions, and is perceived by the public to be allied with much-feared communism. As a result, neither the CCF nor the NDP gain much political power in either period.
Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition
Only in the 1980s does the NDP gain real support from the Canadian public during a federal election. During that period it forms a strong opposition against the Conservative government. As Free Trade is introduced to North America, globalisation has become an issue for NDP activists.
A Party in Crisis
In the 1990s, however, the NDP lost official party status when it elected only nine of its forty-three seats in the House of Commons. In the last election it regained the more than 12 Member's of Parliament (MP) required for official party status, but with three other opposition parties also vying for visibility, the NDP is again struggling to define itself. The current leadership campaign focuses on this issue.
