I heard that too. Or 11:00 tonight, but the best time is tomorrow morning. The most magnificant meteor shower before the end of this century!!!

Pinhey's Point

->417往西开, March/Eagleson出口下道.
->右转上March Rd.

Leonid Meteor STORM - Ottawa - 2002
by: Chris Teron

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY OF KEY CHARACTERISTICS
Observing Dates: November 18 - 19, 2002
Maximum 1: Nov 19, 2002 - 04:00 UT, Nov 18 - 23:00 EST
ZHR=3500, Moon=60º altitude, Radiant=5º alt
Maximum 2: Nov 19, 2002 - 10:30 UT, Nov 19 - 05:30 EST
ZHR=10000?, Moon=9º altitude, Radiant=65º alt
Radiant: Leo (10h 18m, +22)
Population Index: 2.9
Speed: 71 km/sec
Source: Comet 55P/Temple-Tuttle

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Leonid meteor showers/storms of the last few years have produced observations that have dramatically improved our knowledge of the dust trails that create the meteors and resulted in new accuracy in predicting the time and rates for the meteor shower. The 2001 Leonid meteor storm had two peaks that occurred within just a few minutes of the predicted time and with maximum rates very close to the predictions.

These same prediction methods tell us that there will be two peaks this year:

Peak 1 will occur when earth passes through the dust trail created when Comet 55P/Temple-Tuttle passed by the sun in 1767.
Peak 2 is caused by the 1866 pass.
In a normal year, the Leonids produce an average of 10 meteors per hour. Last year's amazing storm produced a peak rate of 1300 per hour. This year, the theoretical peak could reach 10000 though a full moon will prevent us from seeing so many.

PEAK 1:
Conditions for observing peak 1 are not good for people in Ottawa. (It is best observed in Europe.) At the time of the peak, the radiant will be very low in the east skies, just 5º above the horizon. This means that half of the meteors will not be visible. At the same time, there will be a full moon in the southern sky with an altitude of 60º. This does not mean that there will be nothing to see. The bright moon and low radiant should result in us seeing only a few percentage of the meteors, however, with a peak hourly rate predicted to be between 3000 and 6000, a few percent still results in many to see. In particular, watch for low bright "earth-grazers".

PEAK 2:
The moon and radiant reverse positions for this second peak. The moon will be very low in the sky (9º above the horizon) while the radiant will be high (65º above the horizon). Predicted rates vary from a low of 2600 per hour to as many as 10000! This could result in approximately 1000 to 2000 per hour meteors actually being observed - that's 15 to 30 per minute!!!!! DESPITE THE MOON, THIS COULD BE THE BIGGEST METEOR STORM OF OUR LIVES!

SUGGESTIONS
Come and JOIN US at Pinhey's Point for a night of wonders. If you can't join us, here are few observing tips for wherever you will be:

For observing meteor showers, it is always best to find dark skies to see the many fainter meteors. This is even more important this year with the full moon. For the second peak, face away from the moon. Better still, since the moon is so low in the sky, try to block it out with some large object (a large tree, house, hill, etc.). It is best to look half way up the sky, and 40º to either side of the radiant. This year, make sure that is on the side of the radiant furthest from the moon.

SUMMARY
Great news: The biggest storm of our lives is coming.
Bad news: There will be a full moon which will reduce the number of meteors seen.
Great news: Even with the full moon, it should be the biggest storm of our lives.
