7月17日,二十多家单位或组织与steven联系,要求他对此次的事件作出解释;
7月18日,人数剧增,超过一百家的单位或组织与steven联系,要求他对此次事件作出解释,其中很多团体都要求正式的书面信函;
1、指定专人增加打扫厨房卫生间的次数;
2、增加微波炉的数量,使每个人都能及时热上饭菜;

Is this incidence considerred as a HATE CRIME? In Canada, Hate crime inculdes offense based on race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, and disability etc. The offense can have many kinds and different severity.

As to the agent such as 海阔天空中介, if it's involved in any kind of business which potentially harms the interest of those chinese workers, it definately should not get away from it. What does it mean--- "现金工"? what does it mean that the plant pays the agent first and then the agent pays the workers? Pay by cash? Don't the workers have SIN#s? Why does it sound so shady? Will this agent protect the interest of Chinese workers or will it actually facilitate any kind of discrimination without providing any employment protection to the workers? What does it mean---"现金工是一个问题,但它绝不是现在的主要矛盾,它涉及到的只有更多的中国人,而伤害到的也是中国人,所以希望大家能够理性的看待它."? How could getting rid of one more problem harm more Chinese?! Does it mean that it is correct or better for Chinese to let more and more chinese workers underpaid while working overload and getting less or no employment benefit? What kind of "理性" is this?!

Even if those workers are involved in any kind of tax evasion, that is a separate incidence and apparantly both employer(primary employer and agent) and employees are involved. As such, how could the primary employer use the pay issue to hurt his own case if one day he is challenged in court?! Don't protect shady employment agent with the name of protecting Chinese! The existence of shady discriminatory employment agent is itself a helping hand for more humiliation, discrimination and insult. If there was any kind of tax evasion scheme, the workers would actually be victims and they should not have anything to be afraid of. There are Judges making decisions in courts, and they do consider specific circumstances. Those workers are usually low income individuals and from vulnerable group. If there were any punishement from the tax evasion, it should go to the primary employer and the employment agent, and it won't harm more chinese workers. Instead, resolving this issue will increase the wage and benefit more current and future workers.

How are those workers paid? If they are paid in an "illegal" way or very much underpaid, that is more than an offense. If employment agent got involved in this underpay scheme, it should be punished, because it ganged up with bad guys(primary employer) to discriminate and take advantage of chinese workers. So, if there is something wrong about the pay/benefit, both the primary employer and employment agent would be the defendents. How could it harm more Chinese?!

CBC NEWS AT SIX 07/21/2006

News anchor: And in other news tonight.

Quebec’s Human Rights Commission is starting a complaint of discrimination in the work place. The case involves a Montreal import company and members of the Chinese community. ***(Name of reporter) has that story.

Reporter: *** is a 70-year old import company. It hires seasonal workers in its warehouse, usually new immigrants.

Female Worker: This is my first job, first work experience in Montreal. It’s a terrible experience.

Reporter: These immigrants from China have just quit their jobs at Calego. They’d only been working about a week or so when they were called to a meeting with a translator. That was ten days ago. They allege the company’s president made these remarks.

Female Worker: We should flush the toilet after we use it. And I even heard he said that you can’t piss on the floor. And then he said, “This is my kitchen! You Chinese eat like pigs!”

Company: I yelled. I yelled too loudly. After I yelled, I realized I was wrong. I apologized to everyone collectively.

Reporter: Notices posted in the washrooms refer to Canadian standards of hygiene. But Stephen Rapps denies allegations of discrimination.

Company: I never made a derogatory statement. I never said “You Chinese”, I never said any of that. It might have been lost in the translation. That’s a possibility. And I don’t know because I don’t speak Chinese.

Female Worker: "This is my kitchen. You Chinese eat like pigs!" These words she didn't translate. She doesn't want to translate it at all. I noticed this.

Reporter: The group is now seeking legal help.

Workers' volunteer: The law says everybody has a right to the safeguard of dignity, reputation and honor.

Company: I’m very upset that this has gone the way it has gone because it’s not me, and it’s not true.

Reporter: A complaint has been filed with the Quebec Human Rights Commission. It will study whether the allegation against Calego marries the investigation.

***, CBC NEWS Montreal.

Global TV News at Six July/20/2006

Calego - Discrimination?

News Anchor: A group of Chinese switch-off workers is accusing a Montreal company of discrimination. They claimed their boss insulted them. And they’ve called on the human rights commission to investigate it. ***(Name of reporter) has the story.

Female Worker: I just worked for more than one week and….and…..met this….

Reporter: It was ***(name of the female worker)’s first job in Canada, and she quit after just one week. Ten fellow workers did the same because of how they say their boss treated them.

Male interpreter: He was very very angry, and he’s just like “This is my kitchen.” Then, he came like “YOU…CHINESE…EAT…LIKE…PIGS!”

Reporter: What’s more, these ethnic employees claimed they were told to stop urinating on the floors, and in Canada you have to bathe more often.

Male interpreter: And she (female worker) said that…the President’s words are not only the insult against the Chinese workers only, but also against the Chinese community.

Company: I apologize to everyone.

Reporter: ***’s President admits that he spoke loudly, but denies making any racism remarks.

Company: We have a few hot days if we remember last week. And, the warehouse was in a total mess, an absolute mess. So, I gathered all of the employees in the back.

Reporter: Stephen Rapps used the help of a Chinese interpreter to tell the employees to clean up.

Company: I don’t speak Chinese.

Reporter: He suggests that the translation may have been off.

Company: It’s upsetting because at no time IN MY LIFE have I ever used racism or derogatory terms. NEVER IN MY LIFE!!!

Reporter: *** is now considering a lawsuit for slander, but that won’t stop these workers in their search for justice.

Female worker: We will go on…

Reporter: ***(Name) and his colleagues are convinced their former boss violated the Quebec Charter of Rights.

Male interpreter: His logic is like this...I am Chinese, and then I eat like pigs??? So, it’s totally unacceptable.

Reporter: The Human Rights Commission has received the complaint, but hasn’t yet launched an official investigation. At the meantime, the group of employees is trying to launch a class action lawsuit. But first, they need to find a lawyer.

Global news in Montreal, I am *** in reporting.

thanks for all the effort!

That Steven is accusing worker slanderring?! So typical. If he is a dishonest person, people have to use legal ways to deal with him. An honorable person would not incur this kind of trouble in the first place.
The workers should not be afraid if they all give truthful statements and affidavit. There does not seem to be a motive for the Chinese interpretor to lie. What does he mean--"lost in the translation"?! The account seems to be very clear that the interpretor did not even try to translate such an insult. Also, such a simple foul language and easy words can be understood by most of new immigrants. which immigrant does not understand the English words such as "PIG","YOU","CHINESE","LIKE" etc ?! The new immigrants might have language issue but they are not illiterates and they do know some English words, I believe.

If this steven lied in court or during deposition, he would be considered to have perjury.

As to bathroom issue, if the working place itself originally had bad condition or poor maintainance, the employee/workers are not ones to be blamed. Workers in a plant need to use bathroom, just like anybody else. If nobody was hired to timely clean the bathroom, it will natually be filthy, just like any kind of public bathroom which has little or no maintanence. It's a bathroom and bathroom is never a clean place. To females who do not know, all bathrooms for males has urine on the floor close or around urinals, or toilet bowls, and that's natural. Men usually do not sit on the bowl to pee, and splashing is inevitable, and no man is expected to wipe off the splash on the floor after peeing.

If this Steven had harrassment such as "don't pee on the floor", that is WRONG. Can anyone find an example that a normal adult individual PEE ON THE FLOOR? Did this Steven see any worker peeing on the floor? That sounds so rediculous the first moment when it's said.

Could you change your thinking a little bit? such a word sounds so so so familiar and stinks. You think equality is just a trend/fashion or what?

Have the workers found legal counselors? It does not seem to be a
tough case, especially when this steven said on TV(according to the transcript above) that he never said those things that workers alleged he had screamed in their faces. If the workers' account is true and real, they should prevail in court and this steven should pay for the legal fees and the damages.
