Unless there is a leak or you climb on the roof see water behind the ice, it’s very hard to say there is an ice dam from the distance. What in the picture could be caused by normal melting water too? The design of your roof makes all the water goes down to that part of roof, but since slope of the roof is very high, even there is an ice dam, and it is unlike to cause an overflow.

现在这种天气，有些冰柱是难免的。所谓ice damming，可以从外面粗略判断一下。要是某个房顶上的雪化得比同样朝向同样坡度的其他房顶快许多，就要当心这个房顶了。

近些年盖的房子、或是新换的房顶，都加了一层金属皮，叫ice sheild的。这层东西铺在房顶的下半部分、防潮纸的下面。它可以挡住ice dam后面的水，不让它往sheathing上面钻。
