want to drive to Ottawa from Van. early May. can anybody give some advice?

all i know the total distance is 4800km

I droved to Ottawa from Vancouver several years ago. It took me 9 days. What kind of advice do you want?

I did it before.
1) It is very safe for you drive it alone.
2) Most place snow already melted at early May. You don’t need snow tire.
3) Get your car checked and change oil before you leave. Check engine oil every day, I found highway driving burn oil faster than local driving. You may lose l litre oil per day.
4) Drive about 8 to 10 hour per day. Take a nap after lunch helped a lot. Stop and take a rest if you are tired. You don’t need to follow plan 100 percent. There are motels alone the way everywhere.
5) You can stay at Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunderbay, select a small town between sault ste marie and Sudbury , finally Ottawa. It takes 6 days, about 8 hours driving per day.
6) At most place the highway has only two lanes. You have to pass using opposite lane; it is dangerous especially you carry lot of things in your car. So be patient.
7) Buy CAA member ship, you will have free travel guide and map. They are very good

Vancouver still wins by weather and food. But job wise with right skills, people has better chance to get a high pay professional job in Ottawa. I found it is more harder to get a good standard of living in Vancouver by working alone. First winter in Ottawa is hard. Learn to play some winter or indoor sports will get life easier.
If you are looking for house, check www.minto.com Their apartments are well managed.

As for rent, is it a must that I rent an Apt. that comes with air-conditioning? Is it better living downtown?
1. You can buy and install (fairly easy) a AC yourself if the apt you rent does not have one.
2. It is not necessay to live in downtown. Ottawa has a transitway which is similar to skytrain in Vancouver.
3. I think, you have to sign a one-year lease when you rent. While in Vancouver, you don't. That's one difference.
4. You will soon feel that people in Vancouver are nicer. That's another difference.
4. About rout to Ottawa, when you pass Wennipeg, the highway is narrower with two way traffic and the speed limit is 90km. Drive to Ottawa via USA is another choice if you looking to speed. I believ there is no speed limit while driving in Montana, etc.

P.S. Don't take the US routes even it is faster and safer. You are going to have long delays when crossing the two borders with a load of furniture and stuffs.

There are several reasons that I leave BC.

1. The God knows when happens big earthquake.
2. The alwasys up and high housing price.
3. The always cloundy and consecutive 2 months of raining winter weather.
4. I have been living in BC for 4 years it is really time to move.
5. The company I worked in was shut down recently. So I am on EI now.It is a good time to move.

This is my very first long distance drive, if could can anybody provide me a itenary...where I should stay for the night during the 7 days trip?

Is GPS necessary for the trip?

Check the CAA travel guide. There are CAA certified motels. But I found road side motels all meet standard and not expensive too.

个人驾驶习惯不同, 很难给一个行程表. 我可以补充的是搬家费扣税,
