悲惨消息:H1B被LAY OFF, 去加拿大哪个地方最好?[请求]

My feeling is that Canada is much worse than US in IT field. I've been thinking about searching for job in US, while you thought of comming to Canada. It could be your one more mistake.

We can exchange information. You may not know the whole for US and I may not for Canada. Having stayed with several companies, I could offer some advices so you can avoid problems when you start. Life in US is not always good as you image, though I agree that it is very good once u are free to jump without sponsorship(i.e. a GC at hand).

First of all, sorry to hear that though it happens to so many people. Second, if you make living on IT, Toronto and Ottawa may be your choice, however, Ottawa is more on IT application on communication other than govemnent position, like the big guys Nortel, Actel, JDS etc. In Toronto, there is a good chance to find the positions in banks which is quite stable job for senior level. They are not hurt as much in high tech. But I personally don't like Toronto, it's too big and crazy in terms of traffic. Ottawa is nice and small town, besides you don't need to worry about the health care even if you don't have the job. Welcome to Canada!!

看你的意思是美国生活不平静?想过平静的生活?
美国的公司是不是忙一些?加拿大有点太清闲了,让人受不了~~~

Now Ottawa is the worst place for IT job

US_HELL_168, I do not think Ottawa is the good place for you. Even I live in Ottawa now. Since only government is hiring, they need Canadian citizen.

So my suggest is to try another city like Toronto or Montreal.
Good luck.

OK, that's another story.

Even if you can easily find a job in Canada, the high tax may put you off based on the item 4 in your first post. For example, I just got more than 5000 bonus today and the net pay in my hand is less than 3000. More than 40% dispears.

There are some trade offs in life. Think twice before you make the decision.

I am happy to see the warm reponses, but please do not assume that I am an inferior person. Actually I just too confident to my skills and just ignored the immigration limits. When the year is good, I jumped a couple of companies and in year 2001 I thought it is time to keep with a big boat. Every jump I have to wait, and now what I heard is 4~6 months you have to wait for the transfer. Even in this company, the reason for layoff is not the technical side. The big company politics. I were doing technical design in the team and was titled as principle engineer. But hard working can not prevent you become a victim in politics. All my peers under the same manager are whites and project managers. When the layoff starts, I thought I am fine, since I am the only engineer to oversee the project, wrote all technical document while other 4 people just working with project scheduels and most people got laid off today are project managers. The company is located midwest and the only biggest employer in the city. It is difficult to hire people because they have to pay big relocation. On the other side, it is hard to find a job here so guys will try their best to stay in the job even they contributed much less and could be got rid of.

I have two options. The first, finding a job in US, which i am sure that i can, but not the location I can pick. I have to wait again and likely, small companies. But in US, small companies always have problems here and there you have to worry for the company survival. If I could settle in Canada, my wife can unite with me. I made too many mistakes in the back years, so your comments are really appreciated.

Thank you all for your warm greeting! I am feeling comfortable.
I am a telecom guy, and working for a nation-wide wireless carrier until today. Before that, I worked for a coupel of smaller companies, and never worried about layoff before. I am an expereience programmer, knowing most of telecom protocols and can program them without any difficulty. I intended to find a smaller company doing telecom product like voice mail, voxml, VoIP, SS7, GSM/IS41 etc. Just have no clue about the Ottawa, some telling me it is a IT hell.

TO:~流浪的狮子~
My job is not busy at all, actually the company should cut more people, but they cut the wrong ones. They should cut more managers, project managers because there are really many peoplel doing nothing especially these white project managers who have no clue about wireless network. Life is easy, if not threatened by layoff. i once saw some people went to golf at 2 and back at 4PM.
I believe the politics is all the same among big companies, no matter in Canada or US. Unfortunately operation companies have more politics than these developing companies.

Could you tell us which company you worked for and which city you located in the US? I am considering finding a job in the States, as I just got my Canadian citizenship. Thanks in advance!

I am working for a major wireless company located in midwest. If you are familiar with telecom industry it is easy to figure out.
BTW, almost all big telecom companies stop hiring.

Verizon Wireless?

WELCOME TO OTTAWA!

Don't reckon so much on Canada. From what you said, you should have a very good pay job (2 people working in US) before laid off.

There are much less chances in Canada.

My suggestion is that if you want to work, stay in US.
If you have accumulated much money in US, and would like to enjoy the life. Vancouver is not so bad.

Ottawa is alomost a dead city. You will be much much dissapointed.

Welcome to Canada!
Keep your Canadian PR status, better stay here untill you get Canadian citizenship.
Ottawa is nice, even if you couldn't find job here, you may move to Toronto or Montreal...
or just relax and enjoy family life for a while.
living cost here is not high.

Ottawa is a IT Hell. As a matter of fact, the two universities in Ottawa
have received 5000 applications for their master program of E&E in 2003.
Another fact is 90% of the master graduates cannot locate a job.
Another story is about MITEL. Once they post a job on the web, about
test engineer. They immidiately received tons of resume. Some of the applicates
have wonderful background and worked for the telecom giants for more than 20
years. They are overqualified, but the salary they asked is only 35,000!
The big companies keep laying off, and the small ones just use the volunteers
and co-op students.
Think about it.

BTW, don't count on job, you may get laid off tomorrow.
As you said, it had nothing to do with your techniques.
If you realy strong, get a PH.D and stay in the university
as a professor. You don't need to worry about job anymore.
Good Luck!
