Learning another language is considered an asset, even if it's not for job purpose. Here in Canada, particularly in Ottawa (Quebec being an exception because french is second to none), knowing french will not only get you government job, but many private sectors that do business with the government would also prefer hiring people with the language ability. It's like learning programming languages, the more you know, the more to your advantage.
I myself have been learning languages all my life, mandarin, spanish, english and french (result of 2 time immigration..
Although I wouldn't say I've mastered all of them, I can communicate quite comfortably with people in any of them. This has helped me move up the ladder at my current work (government, though I have yet to master the oral, got E-C-B!!)
And, you get bilingual bonus pay as well on top of your salary, and people around you will smile at you more because they don't often see asians speak french ..:-D
In conclusion, I encourage people to learn FSL if you have time and energy, after all, french is Canada's official language and is here to stay at least for generations..
FYI, there are free french courses offered throughout the town, registration is coming up next week, take full advantage of it!
