How to get employed by an accounting firm and the pay scale

(1) New graduates: the accounting firms, especially the Big 4 firms (Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & Young, PwC) usually go to the campus of University of Ottawa and Carleton (in Ottawa) to recruit new graduates each Fall.

(2) Through COOP or Summer Intern: you can apply through the COOP program or Summer Intern program to get an offer from the accounting firms; usually once you get in through these programs, you can get a full-time offer upon graduation.

(3) Experienced: You can get in as Experienced recruits after you get your CA (for most of the job offers at accounting firms, especially the Big 4 firms, you need a CA to get in, especially if you work in the Audit field; if you work in government consulting, which is one of the big services the firms provide in Ottawa, a CGA and CMA should be sufficient in many situations.)

Pay Scale: from what I know, New Grad. in Ottawa normally get paid around $36k to $40k, depending on the firm; after 1 year, increase to $40k to $42k, after 2 years (normally one should get the CA by this time), get paid at around $55K to $60k. After 5 years, should be promoted to Manager, get paid around $60k to $75k; if lucky, get promoted to Senior Manager after being a Manager for 3 or 5 years, then can be paid around $100K to $120K. If you are so lucky to become a partner, then it is absolutely a different lifestyle as the pay will increase significantly.

Hope this helps a little bit!

基本上,如果不喜欢烦闷的工作,还是不要考虑这个吧。会计是一个要非常有内耐性的工作。

我本来可以考,但想想这工作怎么也不适合我。

Auditing itself may be boring. But interaction with clients is definitely a plus.
What's fun about that is you actually go to the clients and 'work' with different companies throughout the year. The rotation of the environment, the industry and the team is definitely fun to experience.

profession is about fit. need to do what u like or need to like what you do.

How to get employed in the Finance/Accounting/Internal Audit groups in the fed. gov.

The job openings for accounting students in the federal government mainly include three groups: (1) Finance/Accounting (i.e., the FI group); (2) Internal Audit (i.e., the AS or AU group). For external auditing, the jobs are in OAG (Office of Auditor General).

From what I know, to get into these groups:

(1) New Graduates: the best way to get in is through the FORD program. This fall, the federal government is recruiting 140 FORD students (https://psjobs-emploisfp.psc-cfp.gc...age=en&psrsMode=1&poster=19826&noBackBtn=true). If this link does not work, go to www.jobs.gc.ca; search for ACCOUNTING/FINANCE/INTERNAL AUDITING - FORD Program.

The start salary for new graduates through the FORD program is $44,919. The FORD Students belong to either the FI - level 01 group or AS- level 01 group. After 1 year (or in some departments 2 years) training, those in AS-01 should be promoted to AS-03; then the salary will jump to $51,718. Those in the FI-01 group should be promoted to the middle range of FI-01 group, with salary being around $50k to $55k.

(2) Experienced: It is much easier to get into the government at the entry level compared to the experienced. The reason is that the government prefers to promote from within; so if you want to enter as experienced, you will face a lot of competition from the current federal government employees who are seeking to be promoted. Besides, most of the middle level and senior level jobs of the government only open to internal employees. The website where federal government jobs open to the public is jobs.gc.ca - emplois.gc.ca

For experienced, you can go to the website of Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada to look for the pay rates. (Rates of Pay for the Public Service of Canada). Normally a middle/senior level accountant/internal auditor makes within the range of $60k to $90k.

(3) For accountants/auditors to work as contractors for the government, most of the time the government contract out through agencies. Big accounting/finance/audit agencies include Roberthalf Finance & Accounting (Robert Half Finance & Accounting - Financial Recruitment Agency - Accounting Staffing Agency), Excel Human Resources Inc., Altis SPR, etc.

Personally, I think the best parts for accounting students to work for the government rather than the accounting firms include: (1) job security - no need to say... (2) pay scale - government pay for accountants is not bad at all compared to the accounting firms if you can only stay at the entry/middle/senior accountants level. Actually if you consider the entire package including pension, vacation days, sick leaves, maternity leaves, work hours, etc., government pay is much better. Of course if you are so good that you can make it to the executive level in the private sector, the pay in the private sector is way much better compared to the executives in the government.... different story......

Hope this helps a little bit...

sounds very right!

but I guess you need to work for one of those big accounting firms or already have an accounting designation in order to have the fun.
