How to get employed by an accounting firm and the pay scale
(1) New graduates: the accounting firms, especially the Big 4 firms (Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & Young, PwC) usually go to the campus of University of Ottawa and Carleton (in Ottawa) to recruit new graduates each Fall.
(2) Through COOP or Summer Intern: you can apply through the COOP program or Summer Intern program to get an offer from the accounting firms; usually once you get in through these programs, you can get a full-time offer upon graduation.
(3) Experienced: You can get in as Experienced recruits after you get your CA (for most of the job offers at accounting firms, especially the Big 4 firms, you need a CA to get in, especially if you work in the Audit field; if you work in government consulting, which is one of the big services the firms provide in Ottawa, a CGA and CMA should be sufficient in many situations.)
Pay Scale: from what I know, New Grad. in Ottawa normally get paid around $36k to $40k, depending on the firm; after 1 year, increase to $40k to $42k, after 2 years (normally one should get the CA by this time), get paid at around $55K to $60k. After 5 years, should be promoted to Manager, get paid around $60k to $75k; if lucky, get promoted to Senior Manager after being a Manager for 3 or 5 years, then can be paid around $100K to $120K. If you are so lucky to become a partner, then it is absolutely a different lifestyle as the pay will increase significantly.
Hope this helps a little bit!
