A voice for the left. In 1927 an American reporter named Milly Bennett photographed Communist leader Li Lisan addressing a mass rally in "Red Hankou". "Li Lisan looks like an Egyptian mummy," she wrote, "that is, an Egyptian mummy in the garments of a monk. His yellow skin is tight over his sharp cheekbones; his black, shoddy Chinese gown bangs over his spare frame like a gunny-sack. When he speaks in that curious shrilly rasping voice, it is never a speech. It is an exhortation."
